The E.28 was designed to get the Power Jets Ltd. W.1 jet engine, designed by Frank Whittle, airborne for flight testing. The first prototype was destroyed after being fitted with the much stronger W.2 engine. The 2nd prototype survived the flight tests and became a part of the Science Museum.
