Designed in 1923 by Grover Loening, this was
one of the first amphibious aircraft. The US
Army ordered 45 for the use at the Philippine
or Hawaiian islands or in regions with large
lakes and wide rivers.

The B18 was developed to relieve the aged
B10. It was developed from the DC2 transport.
The B18 faced in a contest the Martin 146 and
the Boeing 299 and won. The US Air Corps
purchased 133, lateron additional 217 B18A.
IN 1942 the B18 were replaced and used
further as transports and sub
hunters.

The Owls was designed as an observation
airplane. TIn 1940 the US Army Air Coprs
purchased 203 of them. But when the US
entered the war, the Owl seemed not to have
the performance neccessary to survive combat,
so it was redesignated as coastal sub hunter
and liaison aircraft.
