The P12 was one of the most successful
fighter aircraft in the US between the wars.
In both services, Army Air Service and Navy
477 of all versions were in service (P12, -B,
-C, -D, and -E and -F with an all metal
fuselage). Originally, the development of the
P12 was done on the initiative of Boeing.

The P 26, affectionallz called the
"Peashooter" by it's pilots, was the first
all metall monoplane fighter aircraft to be
flown by the USAAC. It was considerable
faster than other fighter aircraft of it's
time. Due to the high speeds, installation of
flaps was necessary to reduce landing speeds.
Boeing designed the P 26 in 1931, originally
designated the model 248, from december 1931
the XP 936. Maiden flight was on 20.03.1932 .
The USAAC purchased 111 in total, the last
25 being B- and C-models.

The P36 was developed from the Curtiss "Hawk"
Model 75. The production for the US Army Air
Corps began in 1938. Altogether some 243 were
taken over, including 30 that were originally
produced for Norway but not delivered. Great
Britain and France had Hawks in front line
service in 1940, even them being inferior to
the german Messerschmitt Bf 109 E. Later, te
remaining P36 were delivered to other
countries. The P36 was the predecessor of the
famous P40.

The Spitfire is one of the most well-known aircraft
in the world. It was designed by R.J. Mitchell, who
became famous by his racing aircraft. The Spitfire
was, together with the Hawker Hurricane, the standard
fighter of the RAF in WW II. It was in use well a
decade after the war.

The Defiant followed a doctrine which meant that
fighter should battle their targets "in line" with
their guns mounted in a battery, like bombers had.
To make sure the pilot doesn't start a war on his own
the Defiant had no frontal guns. This concept was no
success.

The P35 is the first all metal fighter
aircraft with closed cockpit and retractable
gear in service of the US Army Air Corps.
Except those 76 for the US, P35 were in
service in Japan (!) and in Sweden. The P35
was one of the predecessors of the famous P47
Thunderbolt.
