1927 - Polikarpov U 2 / Po 2 Kukuruznik, General purpose aircraft

 

Originally designed as a basic trainer, the "Kukuruz- nik" was used in various roles because its forgiving flight characteristics and its ruggness. It was used as a night bomber, medevac, for proaganda purposes, as a partisan supplier and as well as cropduster. More than 40000 (forty thousand!) have been build.  

 

 

1934 - Polikarpov I 16 Rata, Fighter

 

The Rata was in it's time a quite advanced design: An all metal monoplane with retractable gear, fast and agile. At the beginning of the war, it was outclassed by the next generation of fighters.
