After the war had ended in 1918, Fokker started to design civil aircraft for transport of passengers and freight. His first design was derived from the combat aircraft Fokker D VIII. The hull was enlarged, so 2 additional cockpits could be installed to accomodate 2 passengers. This aircraft has been designed by Reinhold Platz.

The F V was a very special aircraft: She could be flown as a monoplane or as a biplane. The lower wings could be dismounted. So the most of the F V's have been flown with only the upper wings.
