1938 -
Focke Achgelis FA 330 Bachstelze,
Unpowered rotary wing aircraft for use from submarines
|
|
By the low height of submarines, the observation radius of subs was
very limited. The Bachstelze should carry an observer into a better
observation position, so the radius was greatly enhanced. The
Bachstelze is without propulsion so it was dragged by the U-boat
very much the same than today's paraglider being towed by boats
at the beach. The Bachstelze's design allowed the crew to take her
apart and stow it in the U-Boat. Every part was sized so it could pass
the small hatches. A disadvantage was that when the U-Boot was
attacked while the Bachstelze was outside, it's pilot and the apparatus
was lost.
