The O 38 is one of the most well used
observation airplanes (now called
Reconnaissance) of the US Army Air Corps in
the 30ies. They were on duty from 1931, the
last ones being decommissioned in 1941. The
first aircraft to be assigned to a place in
Alaska was an O 38, too.

The DC3 was developed from the DC2 and was one of the
most successful aircraft. With this type comfortable
voyages were possible the first time. The DC3 has
no freight door, as the military version C47 has got.
C47 has been build in much larger numbers than the
DC3.

The B18 was developed to relieve the aged
B10. It was developed from the DC2 transport.
The B18 faced in a contest the Martin 146 and
the Boeing 299 and won. The US Air Corps
purchased 133, lateron additional 217 B18A.
IN 1942 the B18 were replaced and used
further as transports and sub
hunters.

The C39 is the forerunner of the C47 Dakota.
The hull was from a DC3, the landing gear
from a B18 bomber. Douglas did build 35 which
were used in manz important operations like
the evacuation of the Phillippines and the
airlift to Great Britain.

The C47 was the military version of the civil DC3.
It was build in such huge numbers some of them are
still in service in the 90ies. The civil variations
did get the codes C48,C49,C50,C51,C56 and R4D. Mili-
try variations were the C47, C53 and C117.

The Skyraider was designed during WWII, but was too
late to see action. It remained the last and one of the
most successful ground attack planes, which could
compete with the jet driven bombers of its days. The
SPAD was able to get a higher bombload more accurate
into the target than any jet. of that time

In an aera when fighter bombers became larger and
heavier than ever, the Skyhawk design was a little
revolution. This small and agile jet fighter became an
outstanding success. It is on duty up to the 90ies,
when relieved by the FA18 Hornet.
