This is a well known model from the days of beginning
aviation. The Curtiss D Pusher was in use in both civil
and military roles. It was designed as a two-seater
with ailerons and a tricycle undercarriage. The elevons
were operated by the pilot's shoulders. The aircraft
was build in sections so it was easy to disassemble and
transport. The Curtiss Waterplane 1911 is nearly the
same design.

Curtiss JN 4 D Jenny,
Trainig and multi purpose aircraft
|
|
The "Jenny" was america's most popular aircraft in the
time of WWI and shortly after. The original JN3's
performances were not sufficient to field service which
proofed while Pershing's punitive expedition into
Mexico in 1916. The design was modified to the JN4
which was produced in large numbers when the USA
entered the war in Europe. With the armistice the
production was stopped, after more than 6000 produced,
mostly of the "D" type. After the war, a lot of the
"Jennies" were used in general aviation and in mail
service. Charles Lindbergh taught himself flying after
having traded in his motorcycle for an aged Jenny.

Model 75. The production for the US Army Air
Corps began in 1938. Altogether some 243 were
taken over, including 30 that were originally
produced for Norway but not delivered. Great
Britain and France had Hawks in front line
service in 1940, even them being inferior to
the german Messerschmitt Bf 109 E. Later, te
remaining P36 were delivered to other
countries. The P36 was the predecessor of the
famous P40.
