Standard J 1
Two seat primary trainer, USA, 1917

[Technical Data] [Expo/Images] - [ Standard] [ Trainer 1914-1918]

Description:

The J1 primary trainer was developed from the earlier
Sloan and Standard H series aircraft designed by
Charles Healey Day. When the USA entered the european
war, J1 were ordered, then known as SJ. In the same
time, the Curtiss Jennz was ordered, too. The Sj was
developed into the JR. Only a few JRs were ordered, but
some of the design changes were applied to the
production SJs, then designated the J 1. Four
companies - Standard, Dayton-Wright, Fisher Body and
Wright-Martin - built 1601 of the J1s before production
ended. Another 2700 ordered were cancelled.

Most of the J1 were equipped with a Hall-Scott engine,
others had Hispano Suiza or Curtiss engines. Looking
very similar to the Jenny, the J1 was more difficult to
fly und therefore didn't gain the popularity the Jenny
had.
